Following the horrible damage to Florida’s west coast caused by Hurricane Milton, quiet and serene Marymont Park was turned into a staging site for (potentially) toxic waste.
And it’s not just yard debris. It is a random mixture of contaminated household materials, chemicals, gas cans, asbestos, appliances, broken glass, etc.

We hope the City will investigate (openly, honestly and publicly) how, when and why a decision was made to use an active park which anchors a residential neighborhood as a staging area for (potentially) toxic waste when so many other alternatives were available.
Unfortunately, the City of Clearwater has experienced an unexpected and unplanned mass exodus of talent, wisdom and experience over the past five years, or so. This incident is representative of the potential negative consequences which can be triggered by ignorance and/or inexperience.
An orderly, planned and properly managed infusion of new talent into any organization as experienced staff move up in
the organization, seek new opportunities, (or retire) should be a positive influence on organization efficiency and effectiveness.
We assume there was no malicious intent, and that the individual (or individuals) who approved this action to commandeer Marymont Park for inappropriate purpose was misinformed about the nature of parkland and was under extreme pressure to solve a problem during an unforeseen emergency.
That said, it seems clear that the City’s emergency response plan needs to be reviewed and updated to provide better guidance to those in the field so that such an egregious event never happens again.
